Joe Henry Baker

Joe Henry Baker (b. 1989, London) is a self taught abstract artist and designer, working across a wide variety of mediums in an investigation as to what a traditional fine art canvas is. With a background in design, interiors and furniture, Baker is constantly questioning materiality and developing his own tools and techniques, often utilizing humble ‘non art’ materials. His practice emphasizes the physical act of construction and painting, from the foundational canvases to the framing, to the large gestural movements found within. His work comprises of strong yet ethereal structural forms, arising from a curious pursuit and real time reaction to his mediums, pushing them into new territories and the unknown. The outcome relies on a relinquishment of control and premeditated thought - the process is surprising and inventive, encouraging the viewer to be fully immersed and engage in wonder. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
